In these turbulent times, how does setting the table add meaning to our lives? I have thought a lot about the consequences of doing peaceful things – to living a life as if all is well. I believe that life is what we imagine it to be, so that if we imagine peaceful and loving gatherings of family and friends, cooking and serving food prepared from the bounty of the season, preferably acquired from farmers that have grown it, raised it or fermented it close to home, then I do believe we are approaching that ideal. We might think of it as Eden, Utopia, or just a life well lived. We don’t know what tomorrow may bring, so if today we can share our own bounty with others, a well laid table makes a difference. The ethical creation of fine porcelain dishes from my studio contribute to a concert of wellness, of mindfulness and care. These acts, taken on a daily basis form the foundation of a revolution. They add strength to our bodies and souls, they add strength to the communities that make up what we know as our lives, and thus we find meaning in our daily interactions with others, and our lives unfold in a richness that adds to the orchestral might that is the local food movement coupled with the local makers movement.
